The Digital Shipwright

While I realize that the majority of the information on this site focuses on weapons of war, this site is not intended to condone or glorify combat. As a former member of the United States Navy, I fully understand the old adage that no one despises war more than those who must fight them.

Instead, the focus is a purely engineering one. Engineering is defined as the art of directing the great sources of power in nature for the use and the convenience of mankind. In these cases, the great sources of power were harnessed for the end purpose of destruction, but the peaceful benefits of military engineering must not be overlooked. Many common modern items, such as microwave ovens, sport utility vehicles, and even silly putty, have their roots in military research and development.

This site examines the problems that faced Naval Engineers and the complex, and often brilliant ways, in which they solved them. Even more impressive is that many of these complex systems were conceived, designed, and built without the aid of modern computing devices. It is to these brilliant pioneers, engineers in the truest sense, that this site is dedicated.
